Don't know what to do about camping interior, I've got a 4x4 direct roof top tent for staying in, and it will prob just be used for shows and the odd bit of mountain biking.
We will be keeping the camper for proper family weeks away.
I will hopefully be at busfest in it if I get my finger out and finish it, would be good to see some others vans.

New SA syncro

Postby Bigjcc55 » 04 Aug 2017, 19:21

Good bit of progress, it's now finally running and driving after a fair bit of messing about.Image
New gowesty air flow meter and signal filter to replace my old one which was siliconed together.
Image
A little bit of wiring to tidy up on the air conditioning, set the timing and hopefully turn attention back to finishing the interior and the multitude of silly little jobs all over the van that are stopping if from going for an mot.
ImageImageImage
Got six tyres delivered this morning and got a couple of wheels painted so I could try them on, it's amazing the difference painting the wheels and new tyres has made to the look of the van, I'll stick the old ones in the classifieds if any one is in the market.

Thanks again Ian.

Both door trims on today, I opted for putting the electric window switch in place of the old Keep fit window hole, I didn't like the idea of a blanking grommet in place of the handle.
And another brickwerks delivery this morning for the clocks, I bought a good used pcb ages ago but I don't like the connection so it's getting swapped out.
And lastly does anyone know if this fits the syncro thermostat housing for the water temp gauge?

Finally after changing almost every seal in the system I can now get it to pass the vacuum test that allows the machine to charge it with gas.
Once the wiring is finished properly I'll be able to see if the compressor engages and I should have working air con.

John you are missing the blanking plug and breather pipe in the back of the engine mating face
The syncro temp sender is a different length to the one you link to picture and has the junior timer type connection it has to penetrate the alloy thermostat housing the one you show is the 1.9 petrol one that lives in a thin walled metal pipe
but looking great

I have the pipe but no blanking plug, you wouldn't happen to have one Aidan?
I asked Michael at brickwerks if the sender was the same, he said it was? I'll email him back and check. Thanks for the info.

New SA syncro

Postby Bigjcc55 » 13 Aug 2017, 07:08

Fired up the ac yesterday and it works a treat, I also got the gauges for oil pressure and temp working,
Image
I was expecting slightly better than this but I'm getting 1.9 bar according to the gauge at 2k rpm, is this normal?
ImageImage
This is a factory air con switch to replace the horrible aftermarket one, and it is now wired so that on the first position the main cooling fan comes on at the slow speed, where as before it came on hi with no keys in the ignition.

I shall have to pick your brains about aircon symptoms in due course!

I just had to replace the fan resistor pack on my air con wbx westy. The one behind the near side light. In doing so I got the first stage fan back which I don't think I've have had since ownership and also it now comes on when the ac is started. Probably the reason why the resistor has to do double duty and was fried. It's not the double barrel type it's a single barrel and green . What is yours out of interest ?

New SA syncro

Mine is an aftermarket South African system, the resistor for the fan is inside the housing on the inside of the roof area, most of the wiring has been changed now with relays added and it's own small fuse box, as before it was spliced into the main feed from the battery , and big bodge locks into the engine cooling fan wiring. The only factory part I have is the switch which when you turn the fan on gives full ac all the time I have no way yet to control temperature.

Pick away any time Iain.

Treated it to some super unleaded and an mot.
Now that I've driven it I have a new list to get through, mainly a very spongy brake pedal and similar feeling clutch, the clutch has had a new slave fitted so prob have a look at changing the master for both.

Ta much!

This was the only job I managed to get done today, it looks and will perform much better than the old foam mess.
For some reason on an SA van they never bothered painting the engine cover, it just had a light coat of primer and that was very thin in places.Image
