Alternator???

Post by kentishvanman »

Happy New Year to one and all.
Not a good start to a new year.
Battery reading 12.5v. About 11.5v when engine running. Lights on.... reading drops to 11.3v
Warning light has been playing up recently but usually went off when engine revd or lights switched on.
Now it stays on. Alternator about 6 years old and covered approx 20000 miles.
Any other tests/suggestions before alternator removed etc?

Hi,
Put new belt on so that is ok. Checked the tension after it had run in.
All the wiring looks fine but have not undone the connections. Perhaps I should.
By 'bushes' I assume you mean brushes.
Thanks

Ha yep.

They regulate the voltage. Take it out from the back. 2 screws and have a look to see if they need replacing

Have you taken a multi meter reading at the alternator on tick over? L+ to red terminal and earth to alternator body or appropriate bare metal in engine bay.
