Spark plug leads for 1.9 DG engine

Post by john east »

I've just given the ignition system of my 1986 T25 campervan an overhaul, new coil, plugs, leads, and distributor cap. I ordered a set of made up plug leads and to my surprise, because my engine was listed as compatible, they were too short and I had to send them back. I checked other online retailers and those that quoted lead lengths all came up too short as well. So be warned, it's a hassle making up your own leads with modern wires, but you might be in for weeks of frustration buying a made up set online.
It took me best part of a day to make my new set because it's a very fiddly job using the near useless cheap plastic crimping blocks you see for sale online so I'd recommend forking out another £30 for a proper metal crimper.
After five years of telling myself it's an old van so poor starting, occasional stalling and the odd miss fire are to be expected, my van is now nice and smooth. Wish I'd done this sooner.

I got mine from ECP and they fit although one is slightly shorter by about an inch.

We've got these.

Unfortunatley the owner of the company that made our HT leads has retired and the business split up and sold off.
We're just talking to another manufacturer at the moment, it will be months off before we have stock though.

Hi Simon

My current leads work fine

I'm happy to wait till you get it sorted.
Saw a set of your leads and they are even better than the Bosch ones I have.

Yes I drove my van for a dozen or so years including Europe with a new spare set with my emergency stash only to find one lead 1" too short when I tried to use them. Blow me down when I replaced it the new ones were the same! Looks like an endemic problem then.

And why we have our own made..
We do have all the components to hand make sets from Beru components however they work out quite expensive!

I bought a set of Quantum silicone NOS set of leads from a VW commercial dealer in Dartford for £20.00 Reference QHT039/K150. Brilliant  It was like adding rocket fuel to the camper.
