Battery light flickering when indicating

Post by grayzer1 »

Hi,as in the title the battery warning light started flickering this morning when I was indicating or using the wipers. The van starts fine,so I presume battery is ok? Just done 2 weeks in France and had elecy cooler box on all the time through leisure battery so dunno if this has something to do with it? I've not really got a clue when it comes to electrics!

It sounds as though the charge being delivered by the alternator is marginal, there are a number of possible causes:

Slack drive belt
Voltage controller on alternator out of range
Alternator failing
Poor wiring from alternator to starter and then battery

You need a multimeter to be able to check all of the above, except for the drive belt.

This can be caused by bad earthing either at the earth crowns on the front left hand door pillar (behind the glovebox on RHD) or by bad contacts on the multiplug connector to the printed circuit board. Either way they may need cleaning up and perhaps new spade connectors on the earth crowns.
