Leisure Battery

Post by 69gp225 »

Hello,

My van was flat, because of dry carburettor which had been sitting for a while. Poured some fuel down the carb and only charged for 20 mins to crank the the van. Took the van for a 5 min spin.

None of the interior lights work and no volts reading on the leisure battery?

How does the charging process work, I have the splitter connected but wondered if the front battery has to be fully charged first before it charges the leisure battery?

Just trying to fathom out if another issue or just a charging issue.?

Appreciate your help all.

Lee

Start the van again and while the engine is running measure the voltage at each battery in turn.

I would expect to see the same voltage at each battery, depending on what type of split charging system you have fitted - do you know ?

Both batteries are ( if you have a split charge system fitted that works ) charged as soon as the red charge light goes out on the dash .

It’s a myth that split chargers charge the leisure battery only afte the main Battery is charged .

Hello Guys,

Ok so I took the van out and charge going into the rear leisure battery. The freezer lights works and lights up on the zig but for some reason non of the rear interior lights or the weather pump switch for the sink works, no power to the pump.

The engine was out last year for a rebuild. Lights were working last week now nothing?

Any ideas as I go camping on the 1st and need to fix it?

Thanks Lee

The fridge works off independent circuitry, so that says nothing about the leisure battery connections.

What conversion is it ?

Can you put up a picture of the control panel ?

What was the voltage going into the leisure battery ?

Better say what engine it is too as you used the phrase "rear leisure battery"

Hello,

It’s an 84 Devon, I think I may have sus it, the leisure battery is showing only 8.4 volts?
Maybe the battery is shot and not enough power to run the lights or water pump.

I charged overnight and will try this afternoon to see what work.

Will let you know but really appreciate your help.

Thanks lee

most probably.... but for thee sake of diagnosis let's see what it is when it comes off the charger and what charge is going into it when the engine is running.

It'll be worthwhile doing a voltage check after it's rested a few hours, or at least I would before spending my hard earned n a new one. It might still take a charge

Hello guys.

Because I don’t have time to waste as I’m going away I bought a ne battery but I can’t believe it hasn’t cured my problem. I still have to interior rear lights and no water pump?

Any ideas?

Thanks lee

There are some instruction manuals and a rudimentary wiring diagram on this page

http://www.devon.vwt25camper.info/html/ ... loads.html

I would suspect a blown fuse at the leisure battery, or the 12v system has been switched off, but as we don't know what the control panel is etc we're just guessing, rather than making an informed diagnosis

Hey thanks for the info, finally got the rear lights working, some of the wiring had come dislodged so eventually worked it out. As for the water pump I got my brother to test the switch and have voltage plus the fuse is good. Nothing at the sink end when I turn the knob. The pump has been sitting in water unfortunately for1 + years so think it maybe knackered.

Ordered another which are cheap so fingers crossed I will be sorted. Not sure what else I can try regards the pump?

Thanks Lee

Take the pump out and put 12v to it direct from the battery using some temporary wires ? - you have a spare battery to use as a test rig now
