Replacing the temperature sensor T25 1.9 petrol

Post by pcurtis100 »

Hi ,
I'm sure this must have been covered elsewhere but I can't find it.
I've spent the day tracing several electrical faults on my 1988 1.9 litre petrol T25 (watercooled).
The temp gauge isn't working but I have shorted pins on relay 43 to prove the gauge is ok and have measured 10volts on the single connector to the temp sensor - so I'm concluding that the sensor needs replacing.

The sensor has a blue plastic surround and only one connection to it.
The sensors at Just Kampers are all 2 pin - where can i get a single pin temp sensor?

Also I can't find any instructions on how to replace the sensor - do I need to drain the coolant?.
Any guidance much appreciated.
Cheers
pete

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you either have a coolant leak from above dripping down or the water jackets are leaking ( looks like the latter to me) , look at the pink, that's coolant.

need to look for a leaking pipe first and monitor it.

Wow - thanks so much for the response.
I'll take another look later in the week - hopefully I'm getting 10V at the temp sensor.
Can i just check that I don't need to drain the system(coolant) to replace the sensor?
Thanks again

you don't ned to drain but you must swap it quick the retaining clip can be added at leisure.
a little coolant will come out so.wear eye protection and keep your mouth shut.

top up the little thats lost.

is this a fuel injected 1.9? what engine code is it?

clean off the dirt from those wires so we can see the colours and pop the connector off to see what colour sensor?

Hi todays been the first chance i've had to follow up on this. So the sensor with the boot removed is black. The connection has around 10.2V on it and if I short across the two wires the temp gauge in the van goes fully to the right. So I think this is the right sensor?

I think this is a suitable replacement?

I tried hard to find the engine identification number bu failed. All I can find is the recycled logo and the number 2302. See below
