Could this have been the cause of my intermittent starting problems?
Why I would have to tap the starter motor with a hammer?

Only 3 of the 4 bushes were in place when I took the starter apart. Is it possible for one to pop out over time?
I only attempted this job after reading up on previous posts.
Starter off,cleaned up and re-fitted
Solenoid checked.
Oilite bush replaced
Electrics checked
Extra earth fitted
Key in ignition.......Fired up first time with a real kick, and continued like that for the rest of the week
Hopefully problem solved

Re: starter problem solved?
This is most probably your source of erratic working - this brush is at its limit and would have only made intermittent contact. If you haven't replaced the brush/brush pack the problem will soon reappear methinks. As to why the other brush is out of the holder - most likely was inadvertently dislodged as the motor was dismantled.

Re: starter problem solved?
The wear did look pretty bad I admit but a very noticeable improvement when put back together. The missing one was worn about the same too. Unfortunately didn’t have the tools to have a go at them.
How do I go about ordering them for the future in case the problem returns and what would be the method of replacing myself? I presume a soldering gun is needed.

Re: starter problem solved?
You will have to get the make & part number from the starter to identify it first.

Re: starter problem solved?
Thank you for your advice. I will leave for now while it is starting well, but should the problem return, I will remove the starter again to get the part number and go from there.
