(1991 1.6 JX TD Syncro - my first posting on this forum, hi, folks )
After having suffered a damaged turbo due to me having disconnected the aux water pump because its cooling water temp. sensor was broken and the auxiliary pump kept running, which kept discharging and eventually destroyed the battery, I replaced the sensor (which should be 105 C instead of the 107 C indicated in the manuals) and all is well now. I did not even have to let the coolant out/bleed etc. Just quickly slid the new one in, with the car's back a bit higher than the front, filled it up with coolant and let the engine run for a while. No bubbles - I drove 400 km afterwards.
HOWEVER - During testing, I discovered a hidden relay that actuates the pump. You can hear it operate when you stick needle nose pliers into the disconnected sensor's connector - and the aux pump runs.
It seems to me hidden in the vicinity of the air filter.
There are two relays in the little plastic box in the engine compartment, top-left but the left relay is for the fuel pump and the right one is for the glow plugs.
I want to buy a spare relay for that aux pump but if I can't find its location, that's a showstopper... I tried listening and looking but all I was able to determine is that the clicks come from somewhere near the air filter. But I may be wrong. There definitely is a relay (it is mentioned online as well but the clicks are very audible).
Could anyone shine a light on this? Thanks in advance!

It's the one in the junction box that you thought was for the fuel pump.
It's labelled as relay J151 on page 83/1 of the diesel engine wiring diagrams that can be found in the wiki
Oh, and welcome to the forum. Let's see some pics of your van.

Re: Location of aux water pump relay
I didn't think that there was one - the fuel pump solenoid draws very little current so a relay would be superfluous.
