Windscreen Washer Pump

Post by hawke1 »

My 1981 T25 went through the MOT test recently and it failed because of a seized washer pump (supposedly?)
Anyway a new pump (obtained from GSF) was fitted by the garage and all was well.
When I got the van home and I tried the washer it didn’t work instantly. After waggling the switch lever 3/4 times, water came out of the jets. If I leave it for about 10-15 seconds – no water – until I waggle the switch lever again and water then comes out.
Electrical contact is made every time and the pump can be heard every time.
I can only think that the water is running back into the water bottle? Is this possible?
I was contemplating fitting a non-return valve – this may not be the answer, but I suppose it wouldn’t do any harm.
Problem never existed with original pump.

Apart from what I have said, any other suggestions?

Some pumps allow the flow back, just fit a non return valve near to to pump

Windscreen Washer Pump

Post by DoubleOSeven »

I have had the same issue Hawke1. After pulling my reservoir I found the transparent feeder pipe extremely brittle and pinched at 90 degrees as it comes out of the pump and towards the windscreen. Also made sure the rubber grommets were in place on the pump and the larger hole for the fill, to keep the pressure up. That’s all I have to offer on this. The pipe is almost impossible to replace as it goes behind the front panel and the dash.

BigHerbs idea is the one I think.

Bigherb/Double0Seven,
Many thanks for responses.
Big herb - Does it need to be fitted as near to the pump as possible - or can it be fitted just before the tube splits into two - which would probably be less hassle.

If you drop the spare wheel, you can mount it in the hose just above the pump.

bigherb,
Thanks again.

I'll report back on Friday to let you know if all was successful. Here's hoping.

Non-return valve fitted today - problem has certainly gone away.
Screen washer working every time.

Did the original VW pump have a built in non-return valve??

Thanks for your assistance. :ok :ok

Well done. Mine didn't and is the original pump hence fitting the valve.

bigherb,

Can't understand why I never had the problem before??
(Unless the previous pump wasn't original VW, as I am assuming) - and the previous pump did have a non-return valve built I?
