Toggle Switch, Left Below Steering Wheel

Maybe someone will be able to enlighten me here.

I have no idea if this is a standard switch or if it's a mod from a previous owner.

On the left, just below the steering wheel I have a toggle switch, but I have no idea what it's for.

Caravelle GL 1986, RHD.

Probably an aftermarket fitting, VW didn't tend to use toggle switches as they have the potential to damage you if you hit the dash in an accident.

On the C.I 'Xplorer' conversion with the viking spacemaker pop top they fitted a toggle switch on the lower dash (although I have only seen them on the right hand side) in place of a relay to supply 12v to the fridge when driving, this was also accompanied by a indicator light to show it was switched on. Having said that, it could literally be for anything if you know you have an automatic relay that supplies the fridge when the engine is running.

If I were to have a guess I would go for a chicken switch for the fan, or maybe a switch for the stereo to run off of the leisure battery.

Have you looked to see if it is connected to anything or tried turning it on?

Nothing obvious seems to happen when its switched on, will need to check the wiring.

The stereo runs off the leisure battery but this doesn't affect it.

When we got our van it had an ancient Moss alarm fitted (long since expired). That had a toggle switch under the dash, presumably to activate or deactivate the alarm, which of course did nothing. Time to follow the wires - ours led, via load of scotchlocks to a grey alarm box behind the grill.
