Coil on the way out?

Post by jrt »

Hello, how hot is a hot coil? Van cut out suddenly this afternoon, coasted into the side of the road and started straight away and carried on home. Stopped for petrol on the way back and everything ok. When i got back i had a look in the engine bay. It's obviously been hot today but the coil was very hot to touch, when i'd had previous running problems earlier this year i'd tested the coil and it wasn't hot at all. Also the secondary resistance had gone up from 2.8 to 3.4. Does it sound like the coil on it's way out?

Coils do get hot and resistance increases with heat so not necessarily a problem. Coils, unless they have gone open circuit don't normally stop working, more like misfiring from reduced spark voltage.

Looks like the coil is cooked, primary 1.2 secondary not registering. Ordered a new one.
