my gemo cable was oil and a new wheel bearing cap cover fitted its always been like that but holding the cable sorts it? but after 30 onwards it stops and the speeds are good to

I used a Gemo replacement a couple of years ago and have had no issues with it whatsoever. Luck of the draw maybe?

Interesting, did you oil it first?

Paul, have you tried driving about with the binnacle off and making slight adjustments to the cable as it goes in the back of the speedo to see if this makes any difference? You can then see if there is a point where the bouncing stops and try to hold the connection there.

My gemo was fine for a few months,but started bouncing below 30mph a few weeks ago.

yep spent 400 miles doing that on the trip to France, had the binicle of and kept turning and adjusting, also kept stopping and taking grill off and pushing it in an out a bit to see if it was the path behind dash and it did make a difference but never cured it.
Thats when I got the idea it could be the long supporting tube and I cut it down then removed it altogether, better at speed but still bounced heavily at lower speeds.

When the bounce is too high the speedo starts chirping and thats a concern that it will long term kill the speedo.

I feel holding the cable is not the solution becuse it's alsmost impossible to get in behind the speedo and find something thats solid to clamp it to, also pulling on the cable means that you are probabbly pulling on the speedo.

I did montion that how far the outer is pushed into the hub also made a difference in my drill test but I never road tested it

yes same for me they were OK when fitted but no longer are, did you oil yours before fitting?


Rob do you feel like trying a test?
Get under and pull the outer from the hub with the inner in place, good hard tug ( snigger) this makes the inner sit down into the connector at the top.

No i didnt oil before fitting.Will try tugging it later.

Great so thats the oil damaging the inside theory out.

I'm thinking they should be oiled as they make tools for the job and by not oiling the inside gets abraided causing permanent damage, just a theory at the moment.

For the record i fitted a new grease cap when i replaced the cable, thinking the cap might be the cause of the bounce with the old cable.

I fitted a Gemo cable almost 5000 miles ago, and it's still working perfectly - no bounce at any speed. I *DID* oil it before fitting.

Thanks for the vote Chris, how did you oil it?
I dripped a bit in but it seems thats not enough.

I gripped it in the jaws of my workbench, say 75cm above the ground, and I dribbled a bit of engine oil in several times over the course of an hour or so. Did both ends. I didn't use anything as a funnel, so I don't think it will have taken very much oil. Maybe I was lucky and have ended up with the inner pulled short.

I'm still leaning towards lack of oil as the cause because of the two I fitted at a similar time one was oiled better than the other and has been better and lasted longer before bouncing.
