How are you going to drive the cable if you grind off enough to pass through the outer?

Without looking I assumed it was like a ring crimped over the cable and you could carefully cut it off like taking insulation off a cable? Leaving the drive cable completely intact, I can see how it seemed I was saying chop the end off the cable, haha.

Got it, I see what you mean. I would stick one end in a drill then put blobs of grease on with a lollipop sticker/wooden spreader and let the spiral draw the grease up like an Archimedes screw.
Years ago we used to work on generator sets that had a fan drive cable like a giant version of that speedo cable, we had to remove the inner every 12months to grease it or it would bind and unwind in the sheath, made a right mess.

I think someone is going to have to get destructive.

By that I mean chopping one end off, probably the wheel end, and withdrawing the inner cable for inspection. It does mean sacrificing one or two Gemo cables, but they're no good anyway ?

It'll still be possible to test with a drill, using any variety of lubricants if desired, just not fit to a van again.

Alternatively arrange for return to supplier for their R & D evaluation

It was said early on, grease not oil

I'm wondering if the act of oiling has been the cause not the cure.

If they were greased at the factory and you add oil before fitting you wash the grease out, oil clearly does not last.

anyway this VW cable was fine after i oiled it, just a small bounce but no noise so it must be possible to lube it with grease and if it laost longer it may be the solution.

The noise appears to be resonance because it starts suddenly often after going over a bump, deffo coming from the cable becuse if i give it a reach around while driving I can feel it and just stop it by re positioning the cable.

Today I stopped off at tool station on my way home

first attempt didn't work because the inner sealed it off so I added a washer with a cut and this did the trick allowing the grease past into the outer

Dunno how much i got in but after a lot of pumping I got tired and had to stop, it never came out the top but I think a better spacer may do it.

Took it for a test drive and much better no noise and minimal bounce

Only time will tell :ok

pop top.VW cable is better after grease but still noisy at times.

I stole the VW no bounce cable from the tin top and fitted it to the pop top today ( greased it first)
only did a 20 min test drive but looks good sounds good so probably not a speedo issue but a cable issue

tested the pop top VW cable thats noisy with a batt drill and you can feel the vibration
going to try pumping grease down from speedo end to see what happens.

I am thinking back to when my cable broke - it was soon after it exited the wheel area which leads me to believe that this is where there is strong contact between inner and outer. Is this the common failure point amongst those that have had failure? It's a pity that I didn't think more about the point of failure and the reason at the time so that there is more info on the subject.

I'm tempted to buy a new gemo and pump grease in.

maybe that's all that's needed.

pumped some grease in top end today and refitted it ( in the rain  ) had to hold the pipes together while pumping

tested it with drill first and seems better worse when inner is out of cable at hub so pushed it hard into hub

as you can see from the different colours top and bottom this cable has an outer joined in the middle dunno why :?

dunno how much grease I got in but the spiral will pull it down over time I think.

test driver later

That bit didn't make sense to me

If you do get a new Gemo and grease it, how are you going to determine success ? Won't it be a few years before the normal failure fails to occur ?

Agreed. My needle didn't bounce for at least a year after the cable was fitted.

?

with the drill if you pull inner away from outer at hub you get more vibration.

its easy to get a new gemo to bounce in my experience by position but if greased its very stable then it suggests to me thats the issue but you are right its a long term test.

I'm hoping this will work with vw cable and somebody else is going to do the greasing of a gemo test.
