Heater fan not working

Postby ChrisG89 » 09 Jun 2018, 15:48

Hey,

The fan on my T25 1.6D isn't working, doesn't blow anything at all hot or cold. The guy I bought the van off said he changed the fuses, any other ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

Switch, or motor is dead. Poor earth might also do it.

Thanks for reply.

There are two switches and neither do anything, should have mentioned that. I'm guessing the other switch is for the back?

Guessing it will be the motor then. I've bought a manual from Just Kampers, hopefully it's in that!

If you change the motor it can be a pig of a job. Mainly undoing old seized bolts I believe. There is a video on YouTube of someone changing theirs, this helped me loads. Mine wasn’t too bad. Fitted new resistors too while we were at it. Old ones were in bad condition and I think can be a fire hazard?

Not so much a pig as very ploddy. Definately buy some plusgas for air box screws and try to get the captive nuts for these screws with the plusgas if you can.

Thanks for the replies. I think the blower at the back has had it, trips fuses out all the while and power getting back there.

Sounds unlucky to have both blowers fail though?

Its quite possible. As these electric motors age, they draw considerably more amps to start them going. 30 years is a long life to be honest.

Hi Chris. It's coincidence that I was chasing same problem on my T25 (1.6D) only yesterday! I eventually managed to get the 3 position switch out (difficult) but couldn't get a voltage reading on any terminal. I concluded it must be the fan motor connections but balked
at removing dash (as I'm setting off tomorrow). I did manage to trace the earth wire to a very crusty 'multi' earth connection. I spent ages removing and cleaning all earth spades and suggest it's a good idea for all owners! I'm about to invest in a solid -state heater switch via eBay (see YouTube for how to do this).
APPARENTLY THE O.E.M. SPEED REDUCING RESISTORS CAN BE THE PROBLEM and a PWM speed controller is the cheap answer.
Good luck. (Forty)

My fan motor packed up the other day on a run it had been worn for a while, however this also burnt the switch out. Looking over the wiring diagram is the feed wire the correct size?

This is therapy for me rather than usefulness to the community. I am saddened that my fan motor replaced just over a year ago has failed again. I actually paid the local garage approx £200 for the job of stripping out the dash but the mistake I made was to save money by buying a cheap fan motor. Now that is buried deep inside it has failed. At least the (mechanical) window winders still work.

Interesting to know there is a PWM controller. Perhaps I should be less pessimistic and check the peripheral electrics first.

I made two videos on how to convert to PWM as well as a supporting WIKI article. Bear in mind PWM is a fraction of the cost of replacing the resistors but gives infinite control and is more efficient:

Thanks for that. What is the current that the blower takes? Need to get pwm device with sufficient current capacity. Obviously this makes sense instead of hot resistors. Also full voltage pulse is more likely to get motor past any dead spot that might result from worn brushes. Maybe this is what has happened to mine.

Also of interest is the video on removing the dash to get to the blower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-Z6mOAa_hI

Had to replace my fan recently (had help from one who has done it a few times!) and did the PWM modification - not difficult at all once you get your head around the wiring.

Wiring pretty easy. You don't need much of the existing.
