Help to identify a THING in the engine bay

Post by Pinkythelabrat »

Hello there. My first post but I’ve been an avid reader for months

I’m wondering if anyone can help me identify an electrical doodah in my engine bay. It looks broken and maybe aftermarket but I’m clueless.

I’m not sure what it does - perhaps part of the Gemini3001 alarm or something to help idle (my van stalls at startup unless you keep the rpm up with the accelerator - even with autochoke on and a warm day...)

It’s broken whatever it is, a brown wire is detached/snapped.

I drive a 1989 T25 DG 1.9 petrol, 4 speed manual.

Help!

Ps trying to attach a photo now. It’s the blue bit.

looks like a relay, going to be guesswork as to what its for but for sure there is wiring added badly because this is a wet area and it has no protection.

Thanks Itchy,

I'm just reassured that it's not something that was originally meant to be there :)

The wiring is corroded very badly, snapped off green at a touch.

I'll have a look and see if I can follow the wires now that I know its a botch addition. I guess it could be the alarm or maybe an ignition booster? The starter motor died two weeks ago and it had been slow to start since I got it last year. Ho hum! More investigation.

I'm starting to think the previous owner was a teensy bit of a fibber. Especially when he told me he'd had the timing belt changed a few months before...

Yeap theres some electrical bodgery going on there, as I think you've realised, you'll need to trace the wires to see what it's meant to be doing.

If it has or had a towbar then it could be for that.

"So now the biting makes sense!" (TV snobs/TNG's ignore  )
I have something similar on the other side of the engine bay although a bit higher up and have been wondering what it was.
Musing over some unrelated posts and thinking about this post I put two and two together and realized that my gismo is indeed a Hard Start Relay - the subject of many posts it appears.

^^^starter motor on other side, you would not locate a starter realy bodge by the coil unless you were particularly good at bodging.

If there was difficulty starting, could it be the starter boost relay ?
