Devon sunrise split charger not working

Post by ChrisTriple »

Hi all I’m after a little guidance please. My split charging has stopped working on my van. I have no idea where to look or what to look for. It seems to work on the odd occasion. So I’m guessing it might just be the relay breaking down but as to where it is I have no idea.

Thanks in advance for your help

if its devon installed it will be under the drivers seat with the fridge relay
if its retro fitted it "should" be next to the main battery

Nothing under the drivers seat. Nothing near the fridge. Only relay I can see is on the back of the Devon 12volt control panel. That’s connected to the fridge switch for 12 volts when running on said panel

Looking at the 1981 wiring diagram I would follow the red wire from the battery +ve, past the fuse to the "Devon" fuse box (if you know where the fuse box is, then no need to do this bit).

Follow the other yellow wire and you should arrive at the split charge relay.

Buy a multimeter when you get your replacement fuses if you don't have one already

From what I remember the yellow wire goes directly to the fridge. The picture here is the only relay I can find Image

From the wiring diagram one of the yellow wires goes to the fridge switch that then pulls the relay in to power the fridge from a red wire from the other fuse.

The only wiring diagram I can see, the 1981 one, doesn't have a split charge function, nor does it have 240V wiring so you are a bit in the dark here.

As the relay doesn't seem to be in the anticipated locations, best suggestion might be to physically trace the wires from the leisure battery or possibly the alternator to find the split charge relay. You might find the links to Sir Adventure from my thread here useful, even though they're for a different manufacturer http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=161757 or the original sources at camperinfo

Everything seems to go back to that relay in the picture above, my only guess is that not only sorts out the fridge it sorts the split charging out as well? Any idea where i can find a replacement relay?

OK so it seems that the red wire out of the relay is sending ( or should be or should it be?) the 14.5Volts from the alternator to the leisure battery for charging, I’m not sure this is correct but it looks like this is what’s happening.

Once i have a new fuse that i blew earlier, run the engine and check the outputs from the relay the yellow to the fridge and the red wire? If I’m getting the power to the yellow wire and also to the red wire ill be lost as i know that i get the voltage from the leisure battery to the same red wire

Or maybe i disconnect the red wire from the relay and install a new split charging system?

Lost of questions and a lot less answers so far!

I don't think so, the relay does not look physically big enough to handle the higher current for a split charge relay.

I'll have a think, can you check the physical wiring against THE wiring diagram ?

I've been studying the photo of the back of the fuse panel, trying to see if the relay is dual purpose.

There's a thick red wire, which then gets split in two at the terminal block. Where does that wire come from ?

Can you look at the relay and note down which wires go where by terminal number, you should have

Terminal 30
Terminal 87
Terminal 86 - 12v switched feed
Terminal 85 - black connects to earth

I think the switch on the far right is for the fridge- correct ?

The red wire comes from the leisure battery... I’m just going to pop out and have a look at the the relay

Thanks for the help

Sorry not sure on the numbers but hope this makes sense

The Red wire at the back if 12volt feed from the leisure battery. When the fridge is switched to 12volts it drops?

The yellow wire on the left if 14.4 volts from the switch that’s fed from the alternator

The yellow wire on the right goes to the fridge but it only gives the feed from the leisure bat ( I’m sure this is wrong

And the black as you say is earth
