Hi all.
Just exploring some mystery wiring in the engine bay that was wrapped up in masking tape(!) in 3 places.
Not sure the point of the soldered red which looks like a random spur off the wire to the idle cut off?
Also, there’s a red wire with an open connection (next to my index finger)
No sign of any red wires connected to carb or manifold heater.
Are the above just redundant connections? I’ve taped them up in insulation tape for the time being.
Thx,
Ben

Re: Mystery wiring - engine bay
I was looking at a similar issue on my WBX a couple of days ago. Mine has a Weber carb and I came to the conclusion that it did not have all the same connections as a Pierburg.
Page 4 of the pdf below should helpyou lookyourself, though I'm sure someone else on here will know exactly what each of the connections is for (maybe not the spur)

Re: Mystery wiring - engine bay
the lives to the carb are black, they feed from the coil live and all join together at the carb, the thick red for the heating element comes from the relay in the balck box in the corner of the engine bay and that is controlled by the 2nd sender in the thermostat housing if its a late, or by the switch in the metal cross pipe above the dissy if its early

Re: Mystery wiring - engine bay
Beware none of the connections over the engine, black ignition 12V or red thermoswitched heater feeds are FUSED.
A short to the engine and your wiring melts, if it melts through a fuel hose you can guess the results.
insulating tape is not a durable insulation
I have added fuses in the black box, I reccomend it.

Thx so much for the helpful contributions. Especially the wiring diagrams @937carerra and safety advice / pics from @itchyfeet.
