noisy radiator fan

Post by whitebob »

1990 Transporter. When my speed reaches 50 mph, the fan seems to start up, although not going fast. When I slow to 40 mph, it stops, then starts again when the speed increases. What it sounds like is that the air pressure is making the fan turn, and the blades are catching. Any suggestions?

I'd drop the spare wheel and have a butcher's at it to see what it might be catching on. See if anything's loose or if the fan itself is loose. Could also bridge the 3 pin connector to see if it's working ok. If I remember correctly there's a sort of circlip on the end of the fan spindle.

Thanks very much for the suggestion: I'll have a look when the rain stops!
