Non VW electrics question. 32amps split to two 16amps

Post by maxstu »

I hope someone can help please.

We have two outbuildings supplied by a 63amps metered mains supply going to two individually fused Lewden 3 pin connectors at 32amps/240volts with armoured cabling electrics.
Can I split one 32amps power source down to x2 16 amps/240volts so I can run power to another smaller shed and keep reduced power in one outbuilding?

At 16amps each, externally, should I still use armoured cable to both shed and building? And can I connect each new supply to a 3 pin camping 16 amps/10amps ? protected (don't understand this bit) with 3 x 13amps socket outlets' in both buildings.

Neither building uses much power...but I want to make sure nothing fuses or goes up in smoke...including me.

So should I go .....32A inlet, Double pole 40A 30mA RCD, 2 x 16A 3 pin socket, 2 x 16Amp MCB's, with this eBay item:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Caravan-Camp ... Ny8LgRPm5w" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And on to this connect the 3 pin camping socket outlets in each building.

Thanking you in advance

Regards
Stuart

yes you can fit that box looks like you need option 4, you also need a male female 32A cable after that you just plug in 16A extension leads, you can use flex, just inspect it regularly, I have flex running up my garden from a 16A 3 pin socket to my sheds.

I should add you can add as many 13A sockets as you like because the MCB is rated 16A it will trip if you overload it.
best use 2.5mm2 flex cable

Hi Paul,

Thanks very much. No 4 it is. Looks as if you have covered all my concerns, my good man...... and you certainly live up to your Avatar. :ok
So instead of armoured cable l could use same flex as camping cable? Its not in an area of any foot traffic. But check on regular basis.
Thanks

yes camping cable or make up your own by buying the loose plugs and sockets then you can use whatever colour cable you like, preferably black for outdoor, it has better UV resistance.

Strictly speaking pvc cable is not outdoor grade, synthetic rubber cable is H07RNF but I don't like rubber myself outside its more likely to get damaged as its soft.
As long as pvc is inspected regularly its fine imo.

armoured is not suitable for fitting into a 3 pin 16A plug so if you use it you are pretty much creating fixed wiring, the glands to terminate swa need to go into a junction box which you would then have to break out to flex to plug it in.

Dont even know what whasapp is.

Sorry thought you meant swa for the 16A leads, yes you can get 10mm2 SWA into 32A plug and sockets, to make a link cable to the box you suggested you will need to use a colour for earth and sleeve it becuse you wont be able to conndct the armour.

pic coming later of one at work.

Right. got it! Its a similar set up here for 32amp supply but with IP44 Lewden supply box and 3 pin twist connector.

I have a good mental picture of set up required in 16 amps.
Cheers Paul. I owe you one.
