Power/Earth straps

Post by alank950 »

Going to swap out the earth straps on my van for fresher ones and also the battery to altenator power lead .I have ordered a power lead and was wondering if this is ok as its a little heavier than the original.. (Cable Size: 16mm² ( 110 Amp Rated ) think its just a light battery lead.Gonna also run a fresh earth strap from the altenator to the body and swap out the gear box strap ..

Heavier won't hurt a bit. I used heavier than needed as thats what was available

Note the junctions I used - makes it much easier: http://wiki.club8090.co.uk/index.php/VW ... ry_to_dash" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In the mains cables thread is the idea just to fit a cable from the altenators plus terminal to the starter and from the batterys plus cable to starter?.

On my van there is one power cable going from battery to junction box to starter and a power cable from the battery to the altenator.Do i just disconnect the power cable from battery to junction box and replace with new cable direct from battery to starter?.And do i run a new cable from the altenators plus terminal direct to the starter?..i assume its ok then to disconnect the old cables on the starter or can these be left on as i am finding it difficult to get a wrench to the nut..

They are as one. Connect as convenient.

Do i leave on the existing short cable that was on the van from altenator to battery or will this need to be removed?

Doesn't matter really but I replaced that too - not always possible if your alternator has a plug connector on the back. If you have a nut instead, replace cable.

I replaced the alternator to battery cable on mine as it was dropping 1v in that 1ft length! Not difficult to put new terminals on all the alternator wires - you will know that you have good connections all round then.
Why are you adding a cable from the alternator to the starter though? Long way round to reach the battery that!
