12v TV or 240v with Inverter?

Post by bmouthboyo »

OK, I know, I know. I should be enjoying the smell of cow "pooh" and rain, not wanting to slap a TV on but I am a tech lover and with a 210Ah battery have to use it for something other than my USB sockets ;)

I was looking at the 12v TV's and seem pretty pricey, with features I dont need such as DVD player. I do like the DAB / Freeview features however and low power consumption.

It would be much cheaper to get a 240v 1080p 20" HDTV however.

What do you guys recommend? Worth going 12v TV and paying a premium for a lesser featured TV or use an inverter with a standard TV? If so anyone know any low powered ones?

I would mainly be looking to hook my Nintendo Switch up to it and playing movies from a USB stick but watching TV would be a bonus.

Cheers :ok

240V with inverter, very efficient these days, lots more choice.
Spend a few quid more and get a pure sine wave inverter, I have damaged expensive kit with cheap square wave invertors in the past

What efficiency rating is generally good nowadays? 98%?

Quite a lot of TV's rated @ 240V but are actually 12V and use a 12v wall wart.

Yea I read about that but seems that as the 12v fluctuates apparently it can damage them? Not sure if that is common?

Anyone bypassed the TV brick here?

I have a beautiful 12V freeview TV which I bought from Maplin about 9 years ago. this is in my opinion is just the right size for my van. Sadly when my daughter took to camping recently we found that this kind of TV is no longer made probably due to lack of demand.
The alternative I found her was a USB TV stick tuner which turned a laptop (and presumably one of those ridiculous IPad gismo's) into a TV. This together with a flat TV areal fixed her up fine. In fact we now use one of these aerials as it can be wedged up in the high top to get a signal in even the most difficult locations.
And of course I guess most T25 owners wouldn't go on a trip without an internet connection to the 80-90 mobile breakdown advice forum

PS When experimenting with first person drone camera work some years ago we regularly ran equipment - laptops included from via cheap Maplin 12V/240V invertors. Maybe we were lucky

Just bear in mind that few TV manufacturers give full info on their consumption. Its possible to design VERY efficient 12v TVs but not much compulsion on manufacturers to do so. It could be that an efficient monitor and small TV box may be best way to go. I'd certainly be doing all the maths if I was looking to fit a TV.
