Replacing Buzzing Black Box

Post by CJRW42 »

My BBB has died at the ripe old age of 33.

I have a '84 Club Joker which has crank and leisure battery.

I have 240v confirmed as going into the BBB, but nothing coming out.

I have checked the internal fuse and it is fine.

So my questions are:

1. Is there anyone who repairs them?

And assuming the answer is no (or not worth it)

2. Is there a modern trickle charger I can drop in as a replacement?

Thanks

There is also a 'thermal cut out' component (right on top of the transformer) that fails...costs just pennies..little round/flat component.

There are plenty of more modern units that would replace the old BBB (Numax 10 amp unit springs to mind), only complication is that the original unit is dual output (charges both leisure and starter batteries at the same time)
Most owners carry out the wiring mod which removes all consumers from the starter battery and on to the leisure (interior lights/radio) so in practice the starter battery is left alone and so doesn't need charging.
Another option is to fit a voltage sensing relay (a heavy duty one ) that will sense the charge voltage (14 plus volts) and connect the leisure and starter batteries together when connected to the mains.

My bbb was dead when I bought the van - replaced it with the Ctek 7 amp charger which does the job well when on hookup. As above anything "camping" is connected to the leisure battery and the Ctek charges the leisure only - no real need to charge the starter battery while camping as it's not doing anything.

Have since fitted solar though so we don't often hook up now - the sun keeps us charged up - another option worth considering.

Martin you are a legend. It was the thermal cut out fuse.

Replaced and now working again.

Thanks
