Reversing light on an automatic

I've been moaning about the lack of light when reversing especially when i reversed into a low bollard and put a big dent in my stainless back box. Anyway, I've got an automatic and I've been looking for the reverse switch which I understand is near the driveshaft. I can't spot it. Can anyone tell me if its near or offside an a right hand drive?

That would be for a manual box.
Auto's are combined with the starter inhibitor switch at the base of the gear lever.

Thanks. Is it possible for the inhibitor function to work but the reverse function to have failed or are the lack of reversing lights caused by something else?

The reverse light switch and the inhibitor are separate contacts on the same block.
Its perfectly possible for one to work and the other fail.

Aah being having another look I get it. The little bulbs that light up the gear selector are dead, would that affect the reversing lights. Just ordered the switch

The bulbs only illuminate the letters on the shift housing. They do not affect the reversing lights.

What a "idiot" I've been. Changed bulb switch spent ages on web looking for answers etc. Turns out it was the 10amp fuse which was the first thing I checked by torchlight. Note to self don't do anything to the van at night without glasses on. Having said that the leds from CVC are a definite improvement but not in time to save me putting a big dent if my SS backbox

Hi anybody,
Is it easy to get to and service the reversing light switch on my 1981 T25 Automatic. I understand it’s located inside the gear selector box in the cab. Very poor illustrations in my copy of the Haynes workshop manual.

From memory very straightforward, just take the plastic housing off and you'll see it. Brickwerks have the starter inhibitor switch for about £8

Thanks very much Sir Brixalot,

Really easy as you stated. Yes starter Inhibiter switch return spring had gone. Ordered new switch from Brickwerks today. Contact block still in good nick.
Reversing lights haven’t worked in ages. Strangely not an MOT fail item.

Easy to miss. I'd lost mine and just thought they'd dimmed with age. Smashed up a very nice Speedshop exhaust on a low bollard in the dark. Need to get those little lights that illuminate the gear selector working now. Been meaning to for about 8 years
