Sticky stuck 3 way fridge button switches solved

Post by Middle29 »

OK so I posted the other day looking for a thread about fixing stuck fridge buttons. No-one responded so I deleted it but I found the thread & then fixed my own so I thought I'd share for those with the same problem. This wasn't hard so to speak but very fiddly so took a bloody lot of goes to get it back together & working - a bit like pulling the fridge - it got easier & easier the more I did it. Need super glue, bicarb of soda, an old debit type card & some small tools, flat head, phillips & small pliers. Waeco fridge owners feel smug at this point...

I found the original thread on the brickyard here:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/stick ... 34152.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And pm'ed Stefvan about it who made a good suggestion about 3d printing parts - which I didn't need to do but hey ho.

I also learnt that baking soda & super glue are a great way of faux 'welding' plastic. When you take this apart basically the plastic bits inside are probably snapped. The springs fly off everywhere so take it apart in a contained space.

Prise of very gently the tabs all around the casing - they snapp easily - I only had 2 left by the time I finished out of 6. hold it all tight as the moment you prise off the lid the springs go

this is what you end up with. There's 3 spings that are missing from this pic that sit under each button. In stefvans post he had 2 extra pieces. I didn't have these & thought it might not work but seemed to work without them so not sure if it was a different model or what - it looked like a repair had already been done before.

Next I cut strips of an old AA card to run along the edge & fix the plastic on both sides. I also used bicarb & glue to fill cracks in the middle where I couldn't add AA card.

Built up a runner to stop it moving around - lubed it with dry lube for bikes. I had to shave off bits from the top of 'B' (the runner) as the buttons wouldn't sit flush - this casused a lot of hassle dismantling & reasembling & trying different heights to get it right.

By the end I realised there was an easier way of putting it togther each time in one motion, kind of in, down & under - rather than trying to add each one individually & then hold all 3 buttons in place in while adding the top case - either way it is fiddly but once the lid goes on it works like a charm.

Will leave the fridge to sit upside down for a bit (Although it worked well so probably don't need to) & will reasemble tomorrow. Hope this helps anyone who has a working fridge but b*ggerd buttons.
