Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
Would agree with that. I always think the spade connector is a weak point though. I've seen the male part corrode and break away too meaning a new solenoid. Would have been much better with a small nut and bolt.

Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
I solved that problem by soldering a wire directly to the terminal on the solenoid (then shrink wrapped with adhesive lined shrink tube) and brought the join into the engine bay out of the salt spray. You can solder directly to a broken spade also to save replacing the solenoid.

Originally 6mm or you can use 4mm thin wall cable. The Bishop wrote:I need to replace the cable from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. What spec of cable do I need to buy?

Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
Why is that so different to the first diagram? a hell of a difference between 2.5 and 6.00 mm2
But then 6mm sounds far heavier than what I remember being fitted....I think I would be inclined to measure the original, match or upgrade one size.
Purely from memory, the one on mine looks like 2.5 - 3.00mm but then I think we need to take guessing out of the equation and go measure.
Sorry Richard...if that's the wrong size originally suggested..I just translated what the previous poster had written taken from the Bently.....I hope what you have ordered is heavy enough.

Midlife correctly quoted from the Bentley 10AWG, as the yanks can't do metric they rounded 6mm to the closest American wire gauge=10awg
How did you get 2.5mm?
It is a thick 6mm cable

I think we are confusing ourselves with diameter and area of the cable ?!?

I'm not,MidLifeCrisis wrote:I think we are confusing ourselves with diameter and area of the cable ?!?
10 awg is 5.26mm2, but that is the problem using yank stuff there are many areas for errors to creep in. They where made using metric units so use metric units.

Or skip the academics and fit the same or maginally greater than whats already there. Apologies as I didn't mean that to sound blunt but cuts to the chase really - unless whats there is speaker wire

Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
I just googled and found a chart.....either the chart was wrong or I had one of my senior moments again.
I've just googled again and the information is very conflicting....look yourself.
On that picture it does look heavy enough to be 6mm so that begs the question of are they all this heavy as I can't remember it being this size on my 2.1 petrol.

Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
I think this is why I prefer using AWG numbers rather than mm or mm2 because it's so easy to forget the 'squared' at the end and confuse wire diameter with wire area .......
So, 10 AWG = 2.5mm dia = 6mm2 (area)
A table for ref .....

Re: Replacing Starter Cable - Trouble routing over fuel tank
Hi fellas, thought I'd tack onto tgecend of this thread, regarding the battery end of the starter cable..
Is this blue arrowed cable the one that runs underneath all the way to the starter motor (or junction box depending on wiring layout), and is this the one to replace ? I've read the wiki, just wanting to check what the battery end looks like.
(the green one is to my headlamp loom)
Thanks !

The blue arrowed red cable goes to the fusebox in the front of the vehicle the thick black one goes to the starter motor.
