Headlight Loom Upgrade

Just a thought, but I saw this ready made loom kit to give you relays on your Headlights:

I know it is designed for Land Rovers, but I would have thought it could work for T25s too - the only issues being the cable lengths.

Anyway, I thought that looked like a potentially easy solution for anyone looking to upgrade their loom to use relays, with minimal electrical knowledge....

The cable lengths are:

The feed cable is 2.3m long
The cable length between the two H4 plugs (headlights) is 1.4m .

So it's more than long enough.

I emailed the supplier and he responded within a few minutes.

Mmm - I like the layout of that loom - I don't think I've seen any of the many versions on here designed that way; from the pics it looks like both the fuses and relays are situated very close by the battery, then the relay trigger wires are run back from the headlight to the relays (thus allowing the relays to be 'inside') - neat!!

I was thinking the cables might be a little long if anything, but it is designed to fit most land rover models, and the batteries are in various different positions!

Guess I'd have a problem with a JX and the battery in the back but I'm guessing the connections are;

+ve from battery
-ve earth
Single existing headlight connection into loom
H4 bulbs connected to loom

On mine, I replaced the main cable from battery to fusebox first, using a much thicker cable and running it instead to a heavy and insulated terminal block. From there it goes to the fusebox as before, and anywhere else (Including headlights) where I need full whack and without risk of this cabling getting warm. I noted on mine that the original cable had heated up in the past at the fusebox so felt a better cable to the front was a priority before I even fitted relays.

Might be OK for single headlamp versions....wires don't look that heavy but must be up to the job....anything is going to be an improvement over the standard setup.

Ordered one as this has been on the to-do list for a while, let's see if it (a) fits, (b) works and (c) arrives before I need to drive 300 miles in the dark this weekend Will let you know!

....wires don't look that heavy but must be up to the job....

The wires are stamped as 2.5mm square if that helps, first impressions are that it's a nice well made piece of kit.

2.5mm^2 is good.

I suspect they look a bit thin as they are using modern thinwall automotive cable.

From the picture it doesn't look like 2.5 thinwall but if that's what it says.....

29amp rating so yes..certainly good enough for 2 X 60 watt (120 watts = 10 amps)
Twin lamp setups (where all four lights come on with full beam) IMO need a slightly heavier feed. (240watts 20amps)

That setup is very similar to how I sketched mine, the use of a 'male' H4 bulb holder connector leaves the original wiring intact and uses the feed as a trigger for the relays (spot on).

I guess it all depends on cable lengths as to how & where everything will mount and that is its only down side compared to cutting cable lengths as required..

I'd have liked to have done the upgrade but never really understood how. This looks a lot simpler but I've got twin lights. It'd be useful to know if anyone has used one of these on my type of set up. Price looks good as well
