Hi all,,

quick one. I have my dash hard wired, (made by midlifecrisis for me) but the voltage regualtor came off a while ago and I have been driving without temp and fuel gauge for a while now. Its the one in the hardwiring dash wiki.

After getting the van back from passing its MOT i decided to get the new regualtor in. Now I have manged to bugger it all up so I need a plan B. Put the regulator in, but it started get hot and smoke came... The dash lights still work but no temp sensor and fuel, and I dont want to do anything other to make it worse.

could I fit a seperate circuit for these 2, using the feeds from the loom, using 22 resistor and regulator splicing from 10v ignition and ground? I can follow the diagram in the wiki. Will it work?? Any suggestions before I make the move.

One last footnote, what size nut does the fuel gauge take, the one that holds the positive and negative at the back, mine has gone awol, and cant keep it on

Which 10v regulator did you fit? The input and output legs on most aftermarket TO type alternatives are reversed to the original TCY type used by VW.

You can dispense with the 22 ohm resistor it is not an essential component, pre 86 dashboards did not include it and the temp/fuel gauge circuit is identical.

The nuts are M4, I can send you some if you PM me your address.......no charge.

I got the regulator off ebay as instructed in wiki. Middle is ground I presume, whats to worse that can happen if you wire them the wrong way round??

Noted with resistor, so I can run a seperate circuit to rest of stuff as I dont really want to mess with the board and wreck the one the working allbeit without two mentioned

Still no joy on this.

Not too sure if im putting the regulator the right way round. Is there a way to check?? Any advice

Which regulator? Type number is printed on front

Many regulators will only function correctly with a capacitor across the output which is why I need the regulator type number.

If you have a multimeter you can measure the voltage at the guages themselves using the small centre nut of the temp gauge as a reference earth (0v) but make sure you have that centre but earthed. You should be getting around 10v d.c. on the other nuts

With the regulator face up (type data visible) and legs pointing south -

Left leg. Input
Centre Leg. 0v.
Right leg. Output


There must be a capacitor across the output to 0v, value is not critical.

I can send you a capacitor with small eyelet tags soldered onto it and instructions regards fitting it to the nuts that secure the temperature gauge. Very simple to do but I am wondering if you have other errors that could be causing your problems.

The best way to tackle any issues with the dash instrumentation is to have it on a bench and test each function. Pity you are so far away as I would be happy to correct any problems.

Defo, pretty much opposite parts of the UK.

I reckon you could be right about probs.

Dash is hardwired as displayed in wiki. All was fine till the regulator legs broke. I thought it would be just a case of sticking a new reg in. The biggest problem now is with soldering and removal of old reg and various things the board is looking worse for ware and some of the copper tracks are looking a bit suspect.

On the plus side all indicators and light work, battery, not sure about oil, but it does light up and go out once engine starts.

Right,

Had to put some new tracks as the copper had gone on the others.

Hope its ok.. any advice before I put it back in the van
