a few pics from the other day. N/s rear valance patch
Image
O/S as it looks now after a bit of primer to keep the elements at bay
Image
Dash out.
Image
window surround is ok, since had the wire brush on it and no serious rot and no holes, all i can think is that the seals been leaking alowing water to collect on the dash.
Image
or maybe through where the ariel wa\s mounted. cant have been from there as it wouldnt be able to get to the dash from that point.
Image
All holes welded up now and looking better :ok
hope we get some more sun next weekend.

Looking good, tho get the primer covered in a top coat as primer is very pourous, and rust will bleed through very fast!

Been flatting bodywork in preparation for painting next month. decided to use primer to protect bare metal a bit before painting then flat it all back imediately prior to painting.

Also been going through the wiring to the control panel and cutting out , replacing wires etc.
Cleaned the gutters out and treated . only found one piece of serious rust over the drivers door, cut out and welded.
Old sealant removed from around the bottom of the fibreglass roof panel , all resealed and now watertight.

I have noticed some problems with the old paintwork. Before i started to flat it back i noticed a band of pin prick size "craters" all round the van.
when im flatting back i reach the primer almost immediately where its cratered.
on the first panel i did i sprayed it over with primer. the next day there were loads of little brown spots , maybe 1-2 mm across when i ran my hand over they smudged almost as it something was bleeding out of the painwork.
Next pic is the paintwork prior to sanding.
Image
Ive been unable to get a pic of good enough quality to show what it looks like when its bled.
Any ideas what it is???
ive now started to take it back to the original paintwork to remove any trace of contamination.

Note to Phred, Andrea may be doing some welding this week ill post you a pic :ok

A word of caution to anyone doing any sanding down, if your wife has her car parked next to the van, dont let her see it covered in dust, she nearly cut my dangly bits off until i promised to wash it for her  .
still not washed it though hehehe :rollin

Great thread :ok

Almost identical rust to our autosleeper. How are your upper corners just under the poptop? Mine were shot from them riviting the thing down and not protecting metal.

Can i also ask how did you weld the upper seam of this panel?

Keep up good work mate

Hiya mate upper corners were rusty but nothing serious, wire brushed it all back and scrapped as far as i could then blew vatcan up with compressor to get as far under roof as i could.
Cill was welded to upper panel from the inside . drilled series of holes into inside flange on the upper panel then spotted it to cill repair section.
Floor repair was then welded onto this section.
