Where to get Welding Gas!

Post by The Hairy Camper »

Hi people, not sure where to put this topic...so mods please feel free to move!!

My buddy is helping me weld my van up in the next couple of weeks, he has been working as a welder for around 4 years but has all his gas supplied by work!

Not had much look finding Argon C02 Gas outside of his work! Anyone have any advice?

We live in Cheshire and willing to travel if anyone knows anywhere we can get a good deal!

Cheers!

If you've got quite a bit of work to do then it will probably pay for you to open a BOC account just for your restoration, as the Hobbyweld cylinders can otherwise work out quite expensive.

Apparently there are a couple of discount codes which BOC have set up that will give you a better price than list - they are "Volkszone offer" and "Hobbyist", although some reports suggest that they both refer to a "small welder deal" they have?

Some details about these and other offers at the mig-welding forum:

Thanks Clift, my friend was wanting to keep the bottle for his own use too, and get it refilled as and when?

I may just rent a bottle if that's the best solution at the moment though?

From looking at the BOC prices quoted in those mig-welding threads, and at Hobbyweld's online prices, it looks like you would pay around £100 for either a 9.5l Hobbyweld 5 or for a 20l BOC Y-size Argoshield.

Keep in mind that approx half the BOC fee is going on an annual cylinder rental charge, so if you've not got much welding to do, or if you're planning on taking your time then the Hobbyweld, which is rent free, may be cheaper. In most other circumstances you might find the BOC deal is better.
