Seams

Post by Mark rock »

I guess this has been covered before but if anyone can advise best course of action. Bought a 1985 vw autosleeper that needs some restoration work , not to bad on the whole.
Stripped all the interior and original carpet lining out to see what I am dealing with, there is no rot as such but where all the window rubbers have been leaking over time the rust has started to build on the inside of the seam and is weeping through to outside.
Are the seams spot welded together or could I possibly sand blast from outside of van to create cavity, any advice to make my life easier.

Have a look at the restoration threads, and put some photos of yours up too. Hard to comment without photos...

Oh, photos - using a photo hosting site, (beyond me), or using your phone and the Tapatalk app (which I find dead simple)

So the rust on the inside of the panels is starting to bleed through.

Replacing the panel and the wheel arch is the only way of curing that problem, don't waste your time trying to get rid of the seam rust that is starting, it will just come back again, sooner than you think.

Ok so if I cut out and replace panel do you spot weld seams together? And what do you then put into seam to seal.

Yes spot weld from the inside, seal the seams with sikaflex or tigerseal.

That really doesn’t look too bad, focus on the bad bits around the window first is my advice.
