Captains seat armrest bolt covers

Post by itchyfeet »

Nowhere to be found, these are missing from quite a few captains seats, not sure if the late seat adjustable armrest is the same bolt but somebody will know.

Fits over a standad M8 cap head bolt.

What we need is some kind soul with a 3d printer :D

Easily worth a fiver or more each when you consider a set of captains seats is £300+

They're available on Shapeways:

They're a bit pricey as a one-off but cheaper if you need to replace several.

Ah yes, the shapeways model looks good. There's a slight dome to it that would make printing more complex, hence the comment about a 'support structure'. If the dome is important then it would have to be printed like a mushroom, and the support structure could be limited to the face that would be hidden when it's installed. If a flat top is ok, then it will print cleanly upside down without a support structure.

I think a flat top would look better, they are slightly domed but 3D printing just makes it stepped.

Thanks for the link clift_d not seen that before :ok

I was prepared to buy the ones in the link but CJH had already offered to print some and because he is a perfectionist has made a better job of it than the ones in the link, cheaper too. :ok

I also had a kind offer from diabolov, thanks again.

Thanks Paul - glad they fit. 3D printing, at least the 'domestic' version, has its limitations. I used your sketch to reproduce the model precisely, but when I printed it the internal diameter (probably the only one that's critical) was approx. 0.2-0.3mm smaller than the design - a limitation of using plastic filament with a 0.4mm nozzle. But with a couple of iterations it came out as required. I had the same problem with the Pierburg choke parts which were professionally printed in Nylon using laser sintering - the dimensions didn't turn out exactly as modelled. A trivial issue when it only costs time on a domestic printer, but more of an issue when it costs ~£60 a go.

Happy to make more of these bolt caps if people want them - £1.50 each or £5 for a set of four, plus postage. As Paul says, I only have black (or white) filament at the moment. If there's demand I might invest in some brown, although in Paul's photo the original looks black.
