Repairing step

Post by Sir Brixalot »

I can't weld. Would cutting the rot in the middle of the step then using a joggler and just gluing a repair plate be strong enough or would the bead of glue just crack the first time someone stepped on the step?

Otherwise I've been looking at used clarke welders on Ebay, Is it something that can be used by a novice with van on the (quiet) road. The welding done by my local garage was so bad that I'm thinking of having a go myself,

Cut out the rot then repair with aluminium mesh and fiberglass. Worked well for me and was inspected by local authorities.

Or have a go yourself, it's handy being able to weld running these old vans.

Is it realistic to weld, parked up on residential street?

I wouldn't do it on the street - other people's eyes, kids running past etc. good insurance would be needed. I am wary when I am welding close to the footpath in my drive.

Anyone had their steps done recently so I can get an idea on what I should be paying?

It's not really for MOT, its passed year after year with the steps like this -I want a permanent repair. Going to mesh above rear arch from inside as stop gap

From what I believe steps are now an mot thing this was from a friend's transit mot where they checked steps so presume covers all vans .I did mine few years ago as previous owner had it done by garage wno prefered filler to welding charged £80 a side.

Hi! Steps and battery trays are now included in the new MOT.

My bus passed days before the new MOT and the guy marked up the parts that would have failed under the new rules so that I could get them fixed. The parts included the steps.

Better get on to it. One of the first jobs I had in mind when a big lump of filler fell out a few days after I bought it
