I had one with similar problem, the internal spring had basically lost its properties and was fully compressed. I removed it and replaced with a couple of decent spring washers, so far so good.

I've used the carbon fibre assembly paste that I use in the cycle workshop - most carbon components can only be torques to about 5nm so the paste adds grip. Its a posh version of grease with sand in it!

I find this thread very interesting. My passenger (N/S) mirror stays firm. However, drivers side I have always have to wind down the window and re point the mirror on the motorway!
What is this sand and grease method?

Dismantle the mirror, dip your ball in grease, dip your ball in dry sand, reassemble. Don't tighten up fully as you will need to temporarily refit it to get it into the correct position then remove and tighten a bit more. There will be a sweet spot where they are difficult to move but can be moved if necessary.
Mind you don't do what some do and keep tightening in an attempt to get them rigid and they reach the end of the thread and then shear off the bolt.
