First of all have a
Look at the new cap ,is there a thread for it to screw on/off or is it a snap fit ,if it is a snap fit then I think you need to remove the handle from inside. There is a tiny roll pin which will need a flat ended parallel punch slightly smaller than the pin to remove, being very careful not break the glass ! There is then a thin wavy washer, then
I think you will then be able to gently push the spindle outward from the glass ,again being careful not to break the glass or maybe the spindle just falls out.
Then you can maybe grip the spindle in a soft jaw vice to lever the cap off or make a cut in it to weaken it before levering it off.

Hope that helps .
Maybe someone else can confirm this is what you need to do.

I will try that and let you know. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to come at it from the other side. To be honest tho I could do with taking it all apart to deep clean the glass anyway. No point putting shiny new caps on grimy glass

Thanks

One further thought I have had, I think the spindle needs to to go back in ,in the same position as it was originally to keep the range of movement of the handle correct.

Yeah good point. I’ll take lots of pics as I’m dismantling it so I can reverse the process correctly

Update.
I took the window out and cleaned and took apart the catch... unfortunately once catch is apart you can’t press it back through the glass like we thought :-(
I have had one of these caps off before as I remember there is a strange looking anti theft screw head underneath it. If only I could remember how

I am glad you posted that.I was going to strip the catch down this weekend. How you get the cap on is a real mystery. :-(

I saw that you were looking for a cap in the wanted section Rob . I was hopeful you would know how to get the old one off !
Here is my next suggestion for what it is worth.

With the handle removed grip the spindle in a soft jaw vice ,grind a bit of the old cap clean and weld a length of threaded studding or similar to the cap then fit nut ,washer and something to act as a slide hammer all the time protecting the glass from sparks and being careful not to break it . Or maybe someone who has done it before has a simpler meathod !

Heat the cap first in hot water?

If it is metal I would go for heating it in an oven first - it worked for wagon wheels. :D ( Maybe a touch of freezing spray on the head first also - I would consider that as a last resort though as the glass would get cooled also and any subsequent heat may cause it to shatter)
Or is it that it is too rusty and the head size is altered?
As to getting them off - heat with a heavy duty soldering iron. They are only an interference fit so shouldn't be difficult.
