Seats - Replace or re-cover?

Post by Thorssen »

Hi My seats on my 1982 T25 are getting very tired, and have a couple of splits. Has anyone found the perfect seat to replace them (I'm 6.2" so need decent leg clearance under the wheel) or is it simply better to have the old ones re-covered. I'd love to know peoples thoughts - and photos of replacement seats in situ.

If the consensus is to recover, the recommendations of who to do it are welcome - I'm Manchester based.

If the seats you have are original they are most likely to be the basic small seat base foam type, the later caravelle seats have the larger foam base which give more comfort. The larger foam base can be fitted to early seats. It all depends how much you want to spend, it can cost way more to have them professionally re covered than it is to buy a good pair of later style second hand seats. I have a pair of large caravelle seat foam bases and new original vw seat base covers and material to make covers for the seat back.

I'm in the process of replacing with some saab seats - while not to difficult to modify they do require a bit of imagination a fabrication.
The main problem with just about all 'alternative' seats are the fact they result in a slightly higher seat position.

Once I get sorted I'll be listing a pair of '90 seats in good condition albeit in need of a clean. Only obvious damage is to one of the plastic levers.

I had mine re foamed, fortunate the material was in decent condition as I like the original

Lots of seats being swapped in from various cars, but I like the arms on mine.

We bought covers which I fitted myself over the originals from a company in NI. (Fitting was easy)

We could have chosen any colours and these fitted directly over the originals. Also included was covers for the headrests to match.

Total cost was about £140 (from memory) and this was about three years ago. So far they seem to be lasting extremely well.

If interested I can dig out the company name.....

Thats the ones I've just removed - due a clean and then they will either be up for sale or stored in the loft if they'll fit.

Normallty don't like getting rid of stuff as usually when I do its something I need to source six months down the line. Saying that as long as my new seats work out ok I'll let them go for a fair price as there are always other bits on the van I need to replace.
