Rusty bits
Hi,
Wondered what others do to their rusty bits.
I clean area with wire brush/scraper/emery cloth etc
Treat with Vactan and then apply filler. Rub down with wet & dry but use white spirit not water as lubricant.
Apply top coat, Rustoleum in my case, with light rub in between coats.Seems to work but the rust does sometimes return after a few years.
Does anyone use zinc based primers or any other sort of primer/ undercoat?

I now use a dremel diamond cutting disc to remove rust to bare metal, if you leave any rust it will come back no matter hpw good your paint is.

By far the most important question. The wrong media can leave the bare metal with a really coarse finish and some will generate far too much heat causing panel distortion. I can't remember what media I bought and it's now in plastic tubs to keep it dry. Rather than pay through the nose for a few bags plus the dreaded carriage, just find a local blaster and offer him cash for a bag or two.

Re: Rusty bits
I'm looking to get a sand/soda blaster this summer. Any recommendations on machines?
There is a sealey one on ebay, not sure of the quality though. Think I'll need an air compressor too.

The shot and soda kit looks good- Sealey model SBKIT. I had the cheap grey plastic portable kit , it was crap.

Re: Rusty bits
saw a hand held sand blasting machine on facebook marketplace last night - £20
No idea what it was or anything - but it was a red hand held kind of small tool.
Just looked again - it's one for connecting to an air compressor (higher than 3 hp) - Neilson portable sandblaster - model CT1109 it looks like.
& its in Cardiff

Re: Rusty bits
Our recently purchased one is an Eastwood with two tanks one for abrasive and one for soda but you will need a good compressor.
