New front door handle return spring

Post by Born Too Late »

As per the title, does anyone know if this part is available to buy? I've taken apart my passenger door handle to check what was wrong with it and the spring is broken; all I've found are replacement Beetle and Splittie springs.

Plan B is to buy a cheapo aftermarket handle & take the spring out of that

Cheers

Thanks Multisi I'll check them out. That'll teach me to only search items in UK for a German van!

Got it, thanks again.

If anyone else is going to take apart their door handles there's a really good youtube video from Go Westy:

Love the fact he's working with a a virtually brand new lock. I've yet to see one approaching anything like that condition. Usually they're badly corroded, springs rusted away and lock handle so worn, the barrel rattles around in it. After 30 years in a temperate climate, the locks are usually shot and can be opened with a lollipop stick ;)

Aftermarket handles can be re-keyed to your existing key. Much better solution in my opinion. Did mine last year. £12.79 gets you a completely new handle. Use your old locks to rekey them. By now it won't be just the spring thats gone: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-Door-H ... yeah, admittedly he took everything apart in the video a lot easier than I did! Obviously my handle was full of gunk and dirty grease and the handle return spring was rusted in place as well as snapped.

I originally had a look as the lock didn't turn, one of the wafers was jammed up but that was easy enough to free up. In the end I bought a new cheap handle as well as a new spring, I'll either put my barrell in the new handle or put some new bits in my handle with leaving me with a nice lot of spare bits to add to my collection. I do love to take things apart...

Brickwerks have them from £16 to £74, the early left side handle is the rare one.

This place has both genuine VW and aftermarket sliding door handles for early vans, the non VW ones era under £50 but I don't think you can re-key those
