Is my Tailgate Salvageable

Post by The Hairy Camper »

Hi people, I hope you're having a good weekend.

This is my first van and it has it's MOT due next month, so i'm going through all the rusty bits to see whats salvageable/repairable or not!

First up is the tailgate! Probably not a MOT fail but do i need to replace it? Every time you close it, another small piece of metal/rust falls off.

Hi. If that was my van I would scrape off the paint around that area and apply a rust converter such as Kure-rust. You will probably find it not as bad as you first thought (hopefully). The area may only need a bit of filler or perhaps a small local weld repair. Finnish with a good primer and touch up with paint to match the rest of the van. Good luck.
I don't know where I am, but I'm having a lovely time!

Thanks, both of you. It's my first Van so it's all new to me! Love the f'in thing anyway.

Can you buy a replacement panel for the bottom half of the tailgate? I couldn't find them on brickwerks?? I don't mind filler if it looks and performs good anyway :D

VW made lower inner and outer tailgate repair panels but are all sold out now, there is some chatter that JP group are tooling up to make new tailgates.

They make the front and rear panels that are available aswell as loads of other car parts for other makes, if its true about the new tailgates its going to be interesting to see what price they will be !
