Window rubbers staining bodywork

Post by neil1967 »

Hello All

Got a white van and the window rubbers are staining bodywork
everyone it rains.
I have cleaned rubbers with various rubber cleaners but
they still stain.
I have read that a silicone spray could ease it or do I need
to replace rubbers. (The rubbers look ok)

Thanks Neil

Thanks for reply Titus but that's one of the
cleaners I used. It does clean very well but
stains again a few days later when it rains.

Try waxing the body, with a good quality hardwax the dirt shouldn't stick to it.

Replacing the rubbers is an expensive solution.

the rubber itself has perished ,you wont undo this with cleaners/polishes etc, change the rubbers is the answer even though maybe unpalatable

I had same problem with rubbers on my van. Will eventually replace them. To overcome staining, I painted perished rubbers with two coats of tyre black that I use on my motorbikes. Worked a treat, stopped staining immediately.

Good tip, I wonder if one of the new tyre dressing products would do the job?

One to watch for if your rubbers are perished, they start to shrink and leave a tiny gap in the round corners, water gets in and rots the frame.

Regretfully, once window rubbers start doing this, the ONLY fix is to replace them. Anything else is temporary at best. If they're original, you can't expect much else for 30 year old rubber. Do not replace with JK ones though. Pay the little extra and get genuine. Any saving made buying budget ones is taken up by a struggle fitting, and leaks. VW Emporium are the most helpful in this respect and their prices are reasonable. Trim is their speciaility.

To be fair to JK I had a set years ago for daisy and agreed, they were terrible to fit, took four of us on each window, but recently fitted a set to my syncro greta and did them all on my own. Dunno if they've changed owt or just that natural difference between buses

Hello

I have painted window rubbers with tyre paint and
it has stopped the staining.. so thanks for tip.
But I do appreciate that they will probably need to
be replaced in future.

Thanks Neil
