At last I did it. I have been puzzling over this for a couple of years. I wanted to be able to open the rear door in an emergency. First I extended the lever on the lock mechanism then I used a piece of bicycle brake cable and fixed it to the rear door panel with a loop at the end. When the loop is pulled the cable lifts the actuating arm on the lock and the door opens.

...I just bought the genuine VW optional interior releasing latch :wink:

This is a neat solution for a homemade release - also a good idea having a handle to pull the hatch closed from the inside too!
