Questions about prepping/painting

Post by dekhelia »

If the weather holds I might paint my T3 this year, or perhaps next. But either way I'll do some prepping, and I wanted to hear what thoughts anyone who has done the job about 1. what sander to use to get paint removed - I have a compressor, so ideally an air tool - and 2. I think I'll go for a matt finish, and wondered how this is achieved?

Many thanks for any insights

You don't normally need to remove all paint. All you're aiming for is a flat even surface everywhere with a key for the primer. Lots on youtube on prep.

Yeah, I meant that really. Not going to remove paint except for flatting it off ... but I was wondering what implement to use - as in sanders etc. There are quite a few types available, but mostly seem to be either the 'rotary' or 'DA' - dual action - kind, and was wondering what experiences with hardware like this others have had.

I must admit, I do it by hand as its easier to feel any imperfections so can't advise on using a power tool to do it. Unless its a very good one, they can create far more work.

D.A simply means dual action. They usually come with a weight on the rotor which can be adjusted for grinding (heavy rust ) or sanding. When sanding the DA turns in a figure of eight to minimise flat spots, when grinding it revolves like a record player.
Useful for removing rust and sanding down for flatting down paintwork prior to primer.

I use a small Bosch electric "DA" - a PEX 220 A.
Air DAs are too greedy for my small compressor.
