Just thinking, are we talking about the same thing here?
I am on about the hatch you remove to get into the engine bay.
Even the bloke next to me while I was buying it, said he had never seen one that was not metal.

We're talking about the same thing I think - ours is also some form of GRP / plastic.

The plastic grp ones are nominally caravelle ones as they are a 255 part number but they tend to be kept in circulation when velles get broken so lots of vans have them now
the catches are not completely the same as the metal ones having a plastic washer and steel washer rather than the steel tube insert otherwise the parts are interchangeable
The foam can be damaged by oil and diesel especially and can't be replaced easily so be aware when buying them if it's flakey

Good on ya Aidan :ok

Not compared the two for weight yet but if there is not that much difference I'll stick with the tin one

I changed my butchered original steel one for a plastic one recently .on my ,80 devon camper .

the steel one had been " modified " to fit a single weber carb many moons ago by a previous owner , now it has been replaced it has made a huge difference to the carriying capacity under the devon rear deck .

I believe its off a late model diesel version .
