Stiff petrol cap

Post by CovKid »

A quick "how to" if your petrol cap is getting harder to turn - and to avoid key being snapped off in the lock!

If you remove the filler cap and flip it over, you'll see a small pin through the red plastic housing.

Push this through and the whole assembly comes apart.

The last part is a steel washer which invariably gets corroded.

Remove all the rust and coat lightly with grease (ideally silicone grease if you have it) on lower side - not top as the rubber seal sits on it. Alternatively you could paint it. Definately put a dab of grease under the metal plate (with ears?) which the red cap sits in then reassemble.

The surface on which the cap rotates (ie metal face of fuel filler) can also be prone to corrosion - a little emery cloth will clean this up.

Wiki'd for posterity. It was just a minor job I did today whilst removing old fuel tank :D

If the rubber washer has gone, it wouldn't be too big a deal to cut some out of a sheet of rubber. Mine was fine. Cap now turns easily, still gives a good seal but no longer feel like the key is about to break :D
