Tin top factory sun roof seal replacement help.

Post by chewbacca »

Hi guys.
My bus has a leaking sunroof, the big one in the middle of the bus.
I can replacement seals, but the existing one appears to be bonded.

Has anyone swapped one of these seals? If so, any tips please?
What about glue suggestions as well?

Cheers.

Hi All and Chewbacca,

I have the same question about the factory fitted main cab sunroof. I have a new seal and took mine into a sunroof specialist but they didn't seem to know how to attach it or remove the old one.

Any help / advice gratefully received!

Hello mate.
I just gently removed the old one, it was glued on. Knowing me I used a razor blade where needed.
I cleaned up the paint work, then very slowly glued on the replacement, a few feet at a time. I used an impact adhesive, which made things a bit messy, but easy to stick the seal into place.
Definitely a diy job. No need to pay out for this one.
Good luck.

I used tigerseal to fit my new seal

Horrible job with much patience needed

Usually leaks are from blocked drain tubes not a worn seal
Seal is mostly wind stopper

Mine hadn't been masked when the bus was painted at some point in its distant past. It had turned solid and flat. I nearly used tiger seal, but decided getting it to stay in place while it set was going to be impossible, hence impact adhesive.
Definitely agree on drain holes, can't even remember where they ran though!

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give it a go when the forecast looks a bit better.

The sunroof specialists checked the drain tubes and they seemed to be clear. Unfortunately some water is escaping (so not going down the tubes) in the corners of the frame, underneath the white trim that you see from inside the van. Lot's of head scratching as to why that was happening, have you seen that happen? I'm wondering if there are some other bits out of position or something else is missing. Maybe just replacing the seal will reduce the amount of water flow.
