Internal panel rust

Post by LostDog »

I just took the interal boarding of my panel van. The van is really solid but i found some rust. It is nothing major and I've find it before it got too bad but just wonder do you think its a sign of water getting through a seam just normal? Im not new to old cars and rust having owned minis, a morris minor and a t2 in the past. Thanks in advance.

Bit more involved than you might think - but dooable.

You have to deal with that one. You could get the hoover and a wire brush in there and vactan it for the Winter I suppose but its not going to last and the only way to deal with it is as above, cut out the rot and make good. You can only get to all of it by cutting up the side to gain full access.

Thanks for the advice. I've cleaned it all up and applied converter. Not as bad as it looks one cleaned up. Is it with worth renewing the sealant between the panels? is that where the water gets in?

Some say condensation, and that may be true especially when you've got a fridge wedged up against it, but mine has never had a fridge and was really rotten on that side. Mines a Caravelle with sliding window. Spoken to several owners about this one and most feel its progressive water drips from window rather than seam leakage. I'm inclined to support that view and theres nowhere for the water to exit easily. When I had mine repaired I made sure there was an exit for any water that might make its way down there. Got rid of seam at same time. Stayed dry ever since and same window so who knows.

Mines a panel maybe just a build up of condensation in the winters over time or something.

Resurecting this one.

When you say seam do you mean the outer floor seam?

My panel has been cut back and repaired by someone more capable than me. The outer floor that edges this panel has gone as has a small part of the inner floor. In the process of redoing the interior so wondering what to do.

  • Forget about the outer floor edge and use the cill holes as the water exit points should water enter? Window seals have been replaced with a bead of mastic applied to both apatures so no water ingress here now. Fridge vent filled in as going to install a compressor having watched the amount of water being blown through this on a windy rainy day.
Repair the small part of inner floor that has rotted out

There are various other parts of surface rust within the interior I'm guessing where moisture has got behind the carpets some how so was going to scrub those back and treat with converter.

Which converter did you use? Happy with its outcome a year later?

Cheers

Only way I know to treat successfully is to cut out the rust. After all, unless you can get to all parts, its going to continue even if you convert the bits you can see. This applies to external seams also. The construction of these vehicles in that respect was not good. Vactan is very good for light corrosion.
