Full length pop top

Post by myheadsashed »

Anyone fitted one of these top by Special Mobil? Looks pretty smart but I would imagine expensive...

That's just like the overland ones for landcruisers etc..

For me , the only two pops are the westy and the semi high top pop that was on the tigerbus .

I've always wondered why nobody has developed a much more slimline profile poptop , like using the same as the roofskin itself .

I think Special mobil pretty much built to order. Had an email exchange with them a few years ago. I think its a bit more than fitting the top and involves some extra strengthening.
As for low level pop tops I like the look of the Australian Trakka. I've been brewing on the same idea for some time.
One day..........

I've got a trakka pop top and prefer it to any other I've seen. Not really noticeable until its up. But scarcity might not be a good thing for repairs etc..

Pic to follow!

Todmorden west Yorkshire, just by hebden bridge if you've heard of there. You'd be welcome if you're passing :-)

Love to. Same here if your passing.
We're not that far away in Bradwell, Hope valley, in the Peak District. I know Hebden Bridge quite well, its a nice bit of the country very much like our bit of the world.

Am I right in thinking Trakka didn't realy do any reinforcment after they removed the roof members other than the fibreglass frame?
Can't for the life of me see why other converters didn't do the same. Do you get any noticeable flexing?
My hypothetical plans have allways involved somethin akin to a car door with a strong frame and positive locking mechanism to stiffen things up a bit while on the move.

From our honeymoon in Ireland in June no less :-)

There's no additional cross members inside, but from the gutters up its different. Not noticed any flexing, and I'm overloading the roof with a fairly heavy 130w solar panel. Just need to uprate the gas struts one day!

I presume you've come across this.

There's very little left without the glassfibre frame but they made them for quite a few years without issues.
Conventional thinking says if you remove the roof members the whole box shape (van) goes floppy. Not so with T4s orT5s though.
