Engine cover/lid insulation and sound deadening

Post by corduroyculture »

Hi,

I recently bought a new plastic engine lid to replace my heavy and tatty metal one, but the foam insulation and sound deadening material underneath is ingrained with oil. Does anyone know if this foam can be replaced with the genuine VW stuff as I'm hoping that this is the cause of the strong oil smell when I step out of the van...

If I can't buy replacement foam, what do you recommend that I use instead. It will obviously need to be fire retardant! Or is anyone selling a plastic lid in the Leicestershire area?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Cord

so you are chucking a fireproof steel lid and replacing it with an flammable plastic one ? :?: there are a few on here that would have no van if they had done the same,

Soak the foam with degreaser (engine/farmyard, usually caustic based ) and wash it out - you will have to do it a couple of times or more so get a gallon. That's what I did with mine.

Just bought a sheet of quality insulation for the engine lid. Fire proof and great sound proofing. Doddle to fit.

I can recommend this insulation as well - I think there’s only one size to go for Keith. Here’s a pic of how it comes in my thread (scroll towards the bottom):

And with it fitted:
