Re: carburetter
Why?
IIRC i dont think they gve any better performance or economy and usually need setting up on a rolling road to make them work well..
The pierburg works prety well when rebiult and set up properly... poor running is usually just coz they are a bit complicated and people fudge about with them...

I will have a rethink thanks for the advise lads. Geoff
Re: carburetter
I regret swapping my Pierburg 2E3 for a Weber 34 DAT. Good acceleration, but thirsty and very poor cold running. And believe me, I have spent a lot of time and money trying to tweak it right.geoff7 wrote:I will have a rethink thanks for the advise lads. Geoff
Speak to this chap, he specialises in rebuilding Pierburgs. I haven't used his services, but I sold him my old Pierburg on Ebay and had a long chat with him on the phone. With hindsight and if I had known about him before, I would have kept the Pierburg. A well-maintained 2E3 will run like clockwork for years.

Have you read this from someone who works on these vans 24/7?

Pierburg isn't without it's problems granted, but better than the replacement Weber by a long shot.
I've fitted a new Weber for a customer, the bolts supplied were too long and they protruded out of the bottom of the adapter plate and ended up bending the adapter to the point of it drawing in too much air, ran like a sack.
Suppler sent a new base plate very quickly leading me to think that there is a known problem with them.
however, once it is on and leak free that is only the start of the nightmare of trying to get them set up properly. They are only jetted somewhere near and only way to get them anything like 100% is a rolling road tune.
For the ones I have seen and had anything to do with I found that they didn't perform as well as the Pierburg, they werent as economical and I tried to get spares for one once
Honestly, stick with the Pierburg.

Re: carburetter
Sent my carb to the guy at bromsgrove vw, got it back within a week with an email detailing setting up info. Carb look almost new and runs perfect.
In my humble opinion this was a good decision, thanks to all who offered advice.

Re: carburetter
The difficulty in setting up webers (from my experience) goes back to ones I've seen fitted to beetles and type2's. Again they were thirsty and a pig to set up. The stock carb is great if its clean and been sorted. Webers really should be in the same box as the 009 at the back of your garden shed - unused. Dellortos yes but even then you need a rolling road. I have a good friend in Clacton who does all my VW-related carbs and he fits new phosphor bronze bushes and trues up the flap spndles to match, leaving me to install the carb kit. They also end up good as new.
You don't say where you are but he's a handy guy to know and makes almost anything engineering-related from scratch including obsolete parts. Plays a mean blues harp too! Roger Ball - Clacton.

Re: carburetter
Hmmm...
After my engine was rebuilt last year, i got a garage to do the final tweaking / tuning for the MOT they said the Carb was on its last legs. Its a Pierburg 2E3.
The van runs really fast on initial start up, the garage said that was the best they could do....
So, reading this thread has helped massively as I was about to look at a Weber replacement ! But now thinking of just getting the carb checked over and tweaked.
So, whos the guy in Clacton and Bromsgrove....do you have their details and costs..?
Cheers, Richard

Re: carburetter
Hi I have been reading about some of the problems on the wiki regarding fuel leaks and carb problems . I similarly have a 2.0l Aircooled T25 with a petrol leak from the carb. It is not the fuel line as i have replaced this already. A reputable VW garage told me it was the cut off or deceleration jet that is not working and causing the carb to flood and leak. It also back fires after running for a short while when in traffic or after slowing down after a run. I need to find a specialist carb garage in London that can check it over and refurbish. Does anyone know of such a place as so far the nearest i have discovered is Gower and Lee in Watford- the carbs are twin Solex Thanks for any help offered
