Adjusted tappets, now won't start!

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Adjusted tappets, now won't start!

Post by T3luestar »

How do Chap's. Just gave my 2.1DJ a bit of service and it was running well. Left it running for five minutes make sure nothing is leaking, all good, so thought might as well check the tappets. Went round them all giving them 1.5 turns in from touching and now it won't start!
It did actually start after a good while and ran well, so I flicked it over to petrol (from LPG) and it stalled and won't start again. Any help appreciated.

Did you adjust them and check with feeler blades? If you don't have any I'd wind them back out 1.5 turns then buy a set of blades and adjust them properly.

Cheers for the reply mate. When you say adjust them with a feeler, to what?

Sounds like you have over adjusted .
Why did you decide to change the adjustment if it was running fine ??

Does it spin over really quickly with a very loose sound when you are trying to start it ?
If it does it’s because all the valves are not closing so compression not happening

No need for feelers , they are ( should be if muppetry hasn’t happened) hydraulic so which the valves closed each rocker adjustment screw should be preloaded with 1.5 turns from the point of touching .
But you will need to now turn the engine over so each valve is to be set can be adjusted , turn out until not touching then start again

It doesn't sound loose in any way and flattened the battery fairly quickly, when it ran on gas it sounded good.

When you adjust WBX hydraulic tappets with a 2 turn preload as per the manual it won't start ( no compression) for at least a few hours until they have drained back down to equilibrium. Best left overnight and it will be fine.

No manual tells you this probably because you are not supposed to do this unless you take a head off and it will take you a few hours after to get it started.

Thanks for the information mate, I hope it is just a case of sitting it out and waiting. Wish I had known this earlier, the wife is fuming cos I've spent all day under the van, again!

I keep re-reading this, but find I still can't do it without a small involuntary shake of the head.

Sorry I'm not familiar with these engines, didn't realise they were hydraulic. What I thought the OP had done was just turned them all 1.5 turns so my suggestion was to return them to where they were.

Seems my advice was also duff, as I too did not know they were hydraulic tappets on these engines - sorry.
