What is this plug?!

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

What is this plug?!

Hi all, when doing a service yesterday (thanks for all the great info on here!) I noticed that some kind of plug has come off.
I don’t know what it is called or what it does, or whether I should be worried. It looks like a previous bodge as there is electrical tape around the plastic plug’s thread.
Can anyone advise me what is going on here, and whether I just need a new plug (if so what am I looking for?) or is the some kind of larger pressure/mice/Coronavirus underlying cause I need to attend to?
Thank you all. Hope the pic appears and is enough info...

Looks like an inspection hole 'bung' to me and that its just fallen out and having a little lay down.
I'm sure more certain opinions will be on route soon.

Thanks Jim, well here’s hoping that’s what it is, so I can just plug it back in after it’s bit of time out!

Yep. i think it is a timing mark hole. Have a look in the hole first - always worth a look to see if there is any obvious damage to the teeth.

With an automatic gearbox you can reach the flexplate bolts through that hole

Also handy to locate a bolt in the flywheel to stop it turning when undoing the crank pulley bolt.

Amazing thanks guys. I will not worry too much about it having popped off then. Lastly, can anyone point me to a replacement bung? Brickwerks only seem to have a diesel version, which i assume won’t fit...

As a temp measure (3 yrs ago) I made from a bottle cork (different engine) but a hole is a hole and a bung is a bung.
Will probably buy one when I get a job again :rofl
